What are the different types of burn injuries?

A burn injury usually results from an energy transfer to the body. Many types of burns are caused by thermal, radiation, chemical, or electrical contact. There are four different degrees of burns.

First-Degree Burn

A first-degree burn is the most superficial type of burn. They only affect the outer layer of the skin, causing redness and mild pain. Think of a mild sunburn. They usually heal within a week.

Third-Degree Burn

A third-degree burn is a severe burn that damages the deepest layers of skin and the tissues beneath. The skin might appear white or charred. These burns require professional medical care and often leave behind significant scars.

Second-Degree Burn

A second-degree burn goes deeper and affects both the outer and underlying skin. They can cause blisters and swelling and can be very painful. Healing might take weeks, and there's a risk of scarring.

Fourth-Degree Burn

A fourth-degree burn goes even deeper, damaging muscles, tendons, and sometimes bones. Immediate medical attention is vital, and long-term complications are common.

What are the types of potential complications?

Beyond the immediate pain and trauma, burn injuries can lead to:

Infections

Burned skin is susceptible to infections since the skin's protective barrier is compromised.

Emotional trama

Being a burn victim can lead to post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety.

Scaring

Deep burns often result in scars that can limit mobility, especially if they are near joints.

Chronic pain

Some burn victims experience ongoing pain even after the burn has healed.

What are the treatment options for burn injuries?

Burn treatment options vary depending on the severity of the burn.

First-degree minor burn treatment

Because first-degree burns aren't as severe as higher-degree burns, the American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends treating them at home:

  1. Cool the burn. Immediately immerse the burn in cool tap water or apply cold, wet compresses. Do this for about 10 minutes or until the pain subsides.

  2. Apply petroleum jelly two to three times daily. Do not apply ointments, toothpaste, or butter to the burn, as these may cause an infection. Do not apply topical antibiotics.

  3. Cover the burn with a nonstick, sterile bandage. If blisters form, let them heal on their own while keeping the area covered. Do not pop the blisters.

  4. Consider taking over-the-counter pain medication. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help relieve the pain and reduce inflammation.

  5. Protect the area from the sun. Once the burn heals, protect the area from the sun by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing or applying a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. This will help minimize scarring, as the redness from a burn sometimes persists for weeks, especially in those with darker skin tones.

First-degree burns usually heal on their own without treatment from a doctor. However, if your first-degree burn is very large, if the victim is an infant or elderly person, or if you think your burn is more severe, go to an emergency room immediately.

It was a tough fight. It was a long hard fight, and Eric did a great job arguing the case to a jury. He worked hard and was always thoughtful of what we were going through. Now thanks to Eric I don't have to go through the rest of my life being angry, and the Bicycle Club was found responsible for my brother's death.

OMG! I would feel panicky and scared when the opposition was on the stand. Then I would say to myself, "stop, relax, Eric's got this." And sure enough, Eric had it. Best litigation attorney ever!

Found Eric Strongin through Avvo.com. Could not have been more impressed.

Seriously, this lawyer is impressive. I posted a question on Avvo and Eric Strongin wrote me back over the weekend. He included his phone number in the response with an invite to call him. We talked on a Saturday. Eric Strongin got my business insurance company to cover the claim they had denied coverage on. After that, he represented me to the successful conclusion of the case. Mr. Strongin is tenacious, intelligent, knowledgeable and extremely personable. Choosing him was one of the smarter business choices I have made. :)
